Will auto insurance companies try to lapse you if you leave them

I heard that auto insurance companies will cancel your policy, causing you to lapse, if they find out you are leaving them, is that true? I am planning on buying a new auto policy this week that will go in effect on Apr 1 and faxing in my request to cancel my current policy on that same day, am I safe?

Yes, you’re safe, it’s against the law for the company to just cancel you for no reason before that time. I know that in my state (and I believe most others) they are required to give you at least 30 days notice of canceling your policy unless it is for nonpayment of premium.
